Intel to introduce 32-core processor Gulftown by 2010
Intel is planning to roll out a 32-core processor that will perform 15x better than today's processors.
Five years ago, Intel had predicted computers with 20 GHZ chips by 2010. Now, the company is talking of multi-core processors, with as many as 32 cores, which will be ready sometime in the next few years.
Unlike earlier, Intel is not talking about faster clock speeds and higher gigahertz counts. Intel has now switched its focus to multiple cores that will result in a performance 15x faster than existing processors.
The multi-core processor project has been dubbed Keifer by Intel. The 32-core processor project that should be ready by 2010 is called Gulftown. The 32-core processor will be manufactured using a 32nm process. It will include eight processing nodes with four cores each. Each core will run at 2GHz.
Intel has been studying competitive products such as Sun's Niagara architecture for redesigning its processors. Keifer is aimed take on Sun's Niagara which is available in the UltraSPARC T1 processor.
