22 May, 2007

Blizzard Entertainment, the video game company, has announced that its is planning to launch a sequel of its popular game StarCraft. The computer strategy game StarCraft had been a huge success with gamers around the world and the news that StarCraft is making a comback in a new version has made South Korean fans of the game and gamers around the world happy.

The first version of StarCraft, which was released in 1998, sold more than 9.5 million copies worldwide. The first version featured a science fiction environment, where two alien species were pitted against humans. StarCraft is today described as the national game for Koreans below the age of 40.

Top gamers in South Korea have the same celebrity status like that of film stars and other media celebrities. Lim Yo Hwan is an example.

Thousands of gamers had gathered in the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul for Blizzard’s 2007 Worldwide Invitational StarCraft tournament and the company chose this occasion to announce that it is working on StarCraft II.

The game company Blizzard Entertainment is a subsidiary of French Vivendi. While most games today focus mainly on game consoles like Microsoft XBox 360 and Sony Playstation, StarCraft works on desktop PCs.

Blizzard Entertainment, based in California has not announced a launch date for StarCraft II, but there are rumours that the game will not be released this year. StarCraft II will run on both Windows and Macintosh PCs.
