Sony PS3 sans PS2 game compatibility in Europe
It’s all set for the Europe debut, but Sony's PS3 does
not, reportedly, carry the chip for backward compatibility
with the company's PS2. The news is that the PS3 might
instead feature software based emulation of PS2.
The move is supposedly designed to reduce costs and speed up
production of PS3 consoles, said reports. As per the new
decision, the method for playing PS2 games will be very
different, and that Sony wants to now concentrate on
developing more games for the PS3.
With this being effected, downloads will be made available
for the European PS3 to play more PS2 games. However, it
will take a while before the company makes as many PS2 games
playable as possible.
As the Europe plans are ready, reports said that Sony is
also in the process of deciding whether PS3 consoles for
Japan, USA, and other regions will as well be sold without
the PS2 chip. Meanwhile, complaints were reported from Japan
and the US with thousands of PS2 games not being played
properly. There have been rumours about scenes freezing,
music not playing, and the game not working at all in
certain cases. Sony is in trouble shooting mode and is now
offering downloads to fix these problems.
Expert reports say that Sony has meanwhile made a great
decision making PS3 sans the PS2 chip. However, this may
also prove to be bad to the company's Gen-Next gaming
console, added a report.
To add to Sony's woes, Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox
360 consoles are in the market posing serious competition
for the company’s consoles. While Nintendo Wii has been
reported as always out of stock, Sony's PS3 consoles stay on
store shelves. Nintendo has sold 3.2 million Wii consoles
world-wide by end 2006, while Sony has sold only 1.8 million
PS3 consoles in the same period.
The Sony PS3 console offers an unique combination of
overwhelming computing power and Blu-ray Disc, allowing
users to playback Blu-ray Disc software at a high bit rate.
The PS3 can also be connected to high-speed broadband
network through Gigabit Ethernet.
