iPod movie download price negotiations continue between Apple
and Hollywood
Apple and Hollywood studios battle it out over pricing for movie
downloads in iTunes and iPod.
After the phenomenal success of Apple's iPod music players, Steve Jobs and team are getting ready to repeat the same with feature film downloads. The number of downloads stand as a proof for Jobs' decision to charge $0.99 per song. Now, Jobs plans to charge $9.99 per movie.
But the same goes against the movie studios as they are not too keen to charge a fixed price for the movies. The studios are trying to
persuade Apple to sell movies at different prices. When Apple decided to charge $0.99 per song, earlier the music studios had also not shown very much interest in the idea. Apple has been trying to convince the studios to agree to sell their movies online through iTunes for a flat price of $ 9.99. Even a price of US $ 9.99 - 19.99 has been mentioned, but there doesn't seem to be enough movement on that.
The movie studios would like to sell their movies according to their popularity - pay more for a more popular movie. However, such variable pricing is not to Apple's - or users' - liking and they would prefer the simplicity of the flat rate that was a factor in making iTunes a success.
The talk of movies coming to iTunes has been around for some time. Blogs have already started talking about the new iPod model from Apple which is better suited to view films. As usual, Apple has so far kept mum on the availability of the new model.
