Ride the net with AOL’s OpenRide
AOL's OpenRide brings an interesting new interface to the Web that combines IM, surfing and email.
It’s finally out! On Wednesday, Time Warner Inc's AOL released the long awaited software, which lets users search, email, instant messaging and media at the same time on the same computer screen. AOL has been quietly testing grounds for new software from its stable for quiet sometime now. Surprisingly, this new browser is not based on Netscape browser engine, but on Microsoft's Internet Explorer !!!
AOL in an effort to increase online advertising sales is offering most of its services free of cost. OpenRide is optimized for broadband use. It works well over any high-speed cable or DSL connection. OpenRide will have the main window split into four paned "Quad-view". Users can access email, instant messaging, video and browse the Internet without much window clutter. Great for multitasking! In addition, the users can resize the panes at any time with the Dynasizer navigation tool.
It also offers a search box, which is linked to AOL's search engine. OpenRide's four panes will be automatically resized depending on what the user is doing at that particular moment. It also offers him/her a bird's eye view of all the main tasks running in the background. The good news is users need not sing-in unless they need to access a specific service like email. This new feature was missing from the earlier versions of AOL's all-in-one software.
What’s more? Users can also check their emails from rival company's web-mail service, like Yahoo and Google. Industry watchers think that AOL has adopted an entirely new path to woo more and more users.
OpenRide has tabbed browsing and thumbnail previews. It also has enhanced security features like phishing protection and spyware protection, for safer online surfing. It also comes with AOL's spam and anti-virus protections to protect users from spam and harmful viruses.
You will need Microsoft's Windows XP operating system with Service Pack 2 for "OpenRide". AOL has planned a version for the upcoming Windows Vista.
