The Chinese government has said that it will increase supervision of blogs and search engines to filter out material it considers unlawful or immoral.

A report of the Xinhua newsagency quoted Cai Wu, director of the Information Office of the State Council, as saying "As more and more illegal and unhealthy information spreads through the blog and search engine, we will take effective measures to put the BBS, blog and search engine under control."

According to a Qinghua (Tsinghua) University report, there are 36.82 million Chinese blog sites and the number may well go up to 60 million this year. "The market cannot develop without efficient management," said Cai, adding that the government will enhance research on the concerned technology and make admittance standards for blog websites. The government will speed up technology development to safeguard network management.

According to iResearch Consultative, last year Chinese search engine users reached 97.06 million, accounting for 87.4 percent of Chinese Internet users. They expect the number to exceed 100 million this year.
