Yahoo launches Time Capsule Project

Submit anything, and Yahoo will beam it as a laser into space.

Right from today, upto the next 30 days, people from anywhere around the world will be able to submit their art, music, photos, videos, stories, thoughts anything which reflects the human nature. All this will be included in a message, in its time capsule.

Jerry Yang, Yahoo's co-founder said that this is indeed a proud moment for the company to provide something like this. He elaborated that they want people to share their culture and urged them to participate in this historic Internet Time Capsule event, supposed to one of its kind. Right from students to seniors, everyone is urged to participate with personal submissions on topics such as love, anger, fun, sorrow, faith, beauty, past, now and hope. All these submissions, which would be part of Yahoo’s "Time Capsule" project.

These submissions will then be digitalized and beamed with a laser into cosmos from the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, about 40km from Mexico City. The submissions will be archived and preserved electronically for future reference. Exceptional submissions would then be projected on the pyramid. Yahoo! editor and Chief Srinija Srinivasan said "It is there for whoever is out there." (Dude, aliens have better things to do !)

He further added that it would astounding to see what people submit as their part of this 2006 snapshot, which will be shared with generations to come.

Time capsule participant can nominate from a list of global organizations for Yahoo's US$100,000 donation.

Reports suggest that Yahoo has plans to put up the Internet-based time capsule to over 20 localized Yahoo! home pages. This includes the www.yahoo.com too!

The last date for submissions is on Nov 8. The submitted content would then be donated to the Smithsonian Institution Folkways Recordings archives and The National Institute of Anthropology. Remember, your submissions will be reviewed by Yahoo! for compliance with the terms of service before they are added to the time capsule.
