Vonage to launch the V-phone
Vonage will launch a computer phone, called the V-phone to take on Internet telephony rivals such as Skype and the
VoiceStick.
The Internet phone company, Vonage, is going to launch a computer phone, the V-phone, which will allow users to make calls using a dialling software embedded on a memory drive that can be plugged into a USB slot on a laptop or desktop computer.
The software would launch when the USB device is plugged in. When the $40 V-phone is inserted in the USB port, the software comes up automatically and installation takes around 1 minute. The product has its own jack for standard cell-phone earphones. Because of this, you don't have to find the separate sound and audio ports on a computer.
Apart from the $40, you will need to pay a $10 activation fee and $10 as shipping charges. The company will offer the same plans for calling charges for the V-phone that it levies for a Vonage account. That is, $15 a month for 500 minutes, $25 for unlimited residential service and $35 for business use.
You can order the phone over the Internet through Vonage. But, come September, the product will retail at a $40 rebate.
Each V-phone has a specific number and a calling plan. It is very different from the standard Vonage adapter that you can use to connect your phone to a broadband line at home.
