Carnegie Mellon to launch online for Innovative Robotics
Carnegie Mellon, in collaboration with Microsoft, will launch a Center for Innovative Robotics that will focus on building an online community for robotics enthusiasts.
Researchers of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute plan to launch a new online Center for Innovative Robotics. Microsoft Robotics Group will provide the financial support required for this venture. The center will be a resource and online community that will aim to make robotics accessible to a larger number of people. As of now, many enthusiasts feel left out in the cold because software development costs are very high. Many developers who have good ideas may not build on those because of lack of hardware and software resources.
To address this problem, the center will run a Web site http://www.cir.ri.cmu.edu , where professors, students, commercial developers and hobbyists can access and share ideas, technologies and software to foster robotic development. It will use Microsoft's new Robotics Studio, a set of software tools designed to easily create robotics applications across a wide variety of hardware and software.
The center will strive to promote interoperability between different types of robots and software. It will also focus on using the Internet to control robots. The center will be fully operational by end 2006.
