NASA chooses Orion name for moon mission
Nasa's moon mission to be named Project Orion; rockets and moon
lander named Project Ares.
The name will be officially announced on August 31, 2006.
Supposedly secret, US Astronaut Jeff Williams revealed the name accidentally when a taped message was transmitted over ground-space radio.
Nasa has refused to confirm the name. But most experts familiar with the goings-on at NASA have said that the project will be named Orion. Documents, too, have been revealed where the name Project Orion is mentioned for the moon mission.
The rockets for the moon mission and lander are already named Project Ares. The rocket for the crew exploration vehicle will be named Ares I and the rocket for the cargo vehicle will be named Ares V.
Under Project Orion, NASA will put crews of four to six astronauts aboard Orion capsules. Initially they will be placed in an earth orbit, then in the International Space Station and then later to the Moon.
The Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) for the moon mission will be built by by Lockheed Martin or by Northrop Grumman and The Boeing Co. The winner will be announced by Nasa on August 31.
