Mandatory solar heating and lighting in commercial establishments
in Delhi
The Delhi Power Department has drafted a proposal to make all solar heating in commercial establishments mandatory.
In an environment-friendly move, the Delhi Power Department has proposed a move to make all solar heating and lighting in commerical buildings in Delhi mandatory. According to a report in Delhi Newsline, if the proposal comes through then any office or commercial space that has an area more than 250 sq/m will have to install solar panels.
The objective of the move is to ensure that large commercial establishments such as five-star hotels, banquet halls, large kitchens and restaurants in Delhi derive some of their power requirement from solar energy so that the power consumption for these establishments as well as for the city as a whole is reduced.
According to Newsline, the proposal has already been sent to the Delhi Law Department for scrutiny. The draft proposal has two parts: one is energy efficiency and the other is renewable energy. The former will involved the use of CFL lighting and the latter will involve using solar heating and bio-diesel.
The Newsline report further adds that the power department has not worked out penalties yet. The department would prefer that propery owners themselves understand the benefits of using solar energy instead of conventional energy sources. The department will also hold awareness campaigns for property owners. The department will carry out energy audits which will help them convince property owners about the economic benefits of energy conservation.
