Keep off unsolicited mail, Valentine's Day viruses are
here
Love is in the air. So are the viruses. Come Valentine’s
and cyber fraudsters have again gone on a rampage. The
crooks are just floating their ware on the internet,
camouflaged as Valentine's hot stuff.
Security experts have warned of worms flowing into hardware
as romantic messages via emails.
According to a report, PandaLabs has already detected a
worm, called the Nurech.A. This worm hides in emails with
subjects like "Together You and I," "Till the End of Time,"
and "Heart of Mine", the report added. Coming in an
executable attached file with names such as flash
postcard.exe or greeting postcard.exe, the worm is believed
to be deadly. Yet another malware, the Nuwar.D arrives in
messages with subjects such as "5 reasons I love you" or "A
kiss for you".
Expert advice is that all suspicious email, regardless of
what they say they contain, should not be opened. Experts
also have warned about important details like bank accounts
and passwords being compromised, with so many Valentine's
gifts being bought online.
Suggestions are that users type addresses directly in the
browser's address bar, instead of clicking on links that
arrive by email. No bank would request account details
through email, meaning any such email must be treated as an
attempt at phishing, say experts.
Meanwhile security company Sophos has urged users not to buy
goods sold via spam in the run-up to Valentine's Day. A
recent web poll by Sophos had revealed that 9 percent of
computer users have purchased goods sold via spam, which
Sophos claims is more than enough to keep spammers in
business and encourage them to continue bombarding innocent
users with unsolicited emails.
So, as Valentine’s approaches, let not cyber crooks dupe
you. Stay warned.
