Yahoo e-mail hit by Yamanner worm 6
Yahoo has asked users to update virus and firewall software on PCs and warned users to block any e-mail sent from
av3@yahoo.com.
Yahoo on Monday acknowledged that a small fraction of its more than 200 million e-mail accounts have been hit by a software virus.
The e-mail virus, or worm, named Yamanner lands in Yahoo’s mail boxes with a message line `New Graphic Site'. If it is opened, the worm would infect the computer and spreads to all the addresses in the address book.
The e-mail has to be just opened for the worm to spread, though similar viruses earlier had attachments which needed to be downloaded to release the worm.
Yahoo has asked users to update virus and firewall software on PCs. It has warned users to block any e-mail sent from av3@yahoo.com.
Yahoo spokeswoman Kelley Podboy said the firm has taken steps to fix the issue and to protect its e-mail users.
The spokesperson said a solution has been automatically distributed to all Yahoo Mail users, adding no additional action was required from them.
Trend Micro Inc. and McAfee Inc have ranked Yamanner as a low threat worm, though Symantec considers it as an "elevated threat".
Symantec has said that the worm cannot run on the latest version of Yahoo Mail Beta.
Yamanner reportedly exploits a flaw in Javascript technology used to make the mail program easier.
Reports said the e-mail addresses could be sent to a remote computer server. This could be used for spam campaigns, analysts warned.
