New Ford Fusion launched in India

The new Ford Fusion has better looks and a lower price.

Who doesn't love the Ford Fusion? Well, a lot of people, actually. Or instead of all those Maruti Swifts that are breeding all along the country's streets, we would be seeing Fusion instead.

The Fusion ad falls flat, methinks. The Fusion is not about girls and adventure, but its not about ad guys debating nonsense either. Its about a good design, space, good road manners and power - and the last doesn't show in the ad at all. Even the car is not clearly visible. Too clever by half.

What is the new Fusion all about? Firstly, its about a revised price. The new Fusion costs Rs 5.69 lakhs ex-showroom in Delhi. That would mean a price of around Rs 6.3 lakhs for the new Fusion on-road in delhi. On road price in Mumbai would be around Rs 6.6 lakhs. Despite the revised pricing, the Fusion is still not cheap.

Why should one consider the Fusion? For one, you like the 100 bhp that the new Fusion (and the old Fusion) offers. There are many who would like to be in the 100 bhp car-owner category - they are the ones who look at the Fiat Palio GTX or the old Honda City 1.5 VTEC hungrily. For them, the Fusion will be a great car. The car is very well balanced, is a great corner-hugger, has 15 inch wheels which aid greatly in stability, it has SUV-like looks, and the 1596cc DOHC 16-valve Duratec aluminium alloy inline-four develops its 100 bhp at 6500 rpm and offers 14.9 kgm of torque at 3400 rpm. All good stuff there.

What about fuel efficiency and mileage? You hear about actual figures of 9 kmpl to 14 kmpl for the Fusion. The engine is unchanged, and therefore, you can expect the same with the new Fusion too.

Now we come down to styling. The new look of the Fusion is definitely more butch. The front bumper is totally new - and fresh. You have colored indicators now, and there is quite a bit of black plastic - not bad looking at all.

The interior of the new Fusion is a far cry from the dull plasticky look of earlier. You have a twin tone color scheme, which makes it look as spacious as it is.

Problem is, the old Fusion might still be available from dealers at a big discount - which would price it almost in the same region as the new Fusion. With the arrival of the new Fusion, the prices of the old version of the car is set to drop even further. Perhaps, you might be tempted to go for that one, and maybe save another Rs 50,000 on the price.

For now, enjoy the pictures on this page. More info on road tests and photos coming up as soon as someone manages to get one for a test drive.
